There is no single accepted definition of the Riverina. Mostly it is regarded as the area extending north from the Murray as far as the Lachlan catchment. Here I take the Riverina to be the main irrigation zones only and draw the northern boundary not far past the Murrumbidgee. The Lachlan Valley has a very different flavour to the more closely settled and fertile Riverina proper, and the vast Hay Plains are a world unto themselves; both sit more comfortably as part of the Central region.
