The Spirit of Tasmania III was not a success. Smaller and older than the Spirit I and Spirit II, she was purchased to operate between Devonport and Sydney, starting in 2003. After three years of poor patronage and heavy losses, the Tasmanian government abandoned the Sydney route and Spirit III was sold overseas.
