Blakely’s Red Gums

Blakely’s Red Gums

Everwhere I go I am depressed at the ceaseless destruction we humans inflict upon our once-beautiful planet. Inch by inch and mile by mile, I see this wonderful continent being turned into asphalt and concrete; sterile suburban gardens surrounded by buffer zones of nasty feral weeds speading out like a cancer from our population centres into what remains of the bush; every time I travel I see another tiny strip of precious native grassland boomsprayed and graded flat ...... And here we have a near-pristine stand of granitic sands woodland with an ugly old car in it.

Most people look at this picture and just see the march of urban ugliness in it. But I see the contradiction: slowly and surely, little by little, the bush is consuming the old car body, turning it into soil, into shelter, into creative places to build a nest and raise youngsters. Here in this one small spot ...... nature is winning.
