Rabbit-proof fence

Rabbit-proof fence

Officially known as the State Barrier Fence, this stretches for 1200 kilometres across Western Australia. Originally erected in a futile attempt to keep rabbits out, it was finished in 1907. It is still operational today and has even been extended to meet the southern coast near Esperance. It is useless against rabbits, of course, but people say it keeps Emus out of the crop lands and stops ’wild dogs’ entering the ’civilised’ parts of the state. (’Wild dog’ is code for Dingo.)
