Hard disc drives are extraordinarily photogenic devices, and the last bastion of high-precision mechanical engineering amongst an otherwise all-electronic computer landscape. Rotating magnetic storage was invented in the 1950s and probably won’t exist after about 2030. Like the steam train and the sailing ship, hard drives will be exterminated by faster, more efficient, and much less beautiful modern replacements.
