Salt Creek — an undistinguished little tributary of Joyce’s Creek in the Loddon River catchment — cuts across the middle of this picture on the edge of the Central Volcanic Plain. For a number of reasons, several of them natural, the plain is is largely treeless. In the distance an outcrop of Yellow Box woodland marks an area where the thin cover of volcanic material gives out and the ancient Ordovician underlay is exposed.
