Little Black Cormorant

Little Black Cormorant

This year the house dam has been attracting all sorts of cormorants, especially the Little Blacks. Most years the White-faced Heron spends day after day cleaning out the tadpoles; this year the heron hasn’t been around much and the cormorants have been calling in almost every day, sometimes one at a time, sometimes in small groups. Usually they fly in, spend half an hour diving for frogs, sit on a log to preen and dry out, snooze for an hour or two, and then fly out again. They are quite used to us and pay little attention to human comings and goings.
