South Australians call this wonderful but neglected part of their state the mid-north, which makes no sense at all — is well over towards the easten side of the state and more central-south than north. Bounded by the southern Flinders Ranges on the west and the arid Murray plains on the east, this is the country around Burra, Peterborough, Melrose, and Jamestown. Most of it is cleared but reasonably extensive pockets remain, and there is probably nowhere in Australia that has a better range of raptors.
