Looking beyond the ploughed firebreak in the immediate foreground, we see the same sort of bush, in the same place, at the same time, but after heavy grazing by domestic stock. Instead of perhaps 50 or 80 species in sight, there are four or five, and two of those are probably weeds.
Logging gets a lot of publicity in Australia, perhaps rightly so given some of the atrocities that take place in Tasmania, but once you get out of the rainforest and the Mountain Ash and into the main part of the Australian countryside, grazing does far, far more damage to our biodiversity than logging ever did or ever will.
The crazy part of this is that most of the damage takes place on land that produces very little profit in any case.
