When the lower Cooper floods, it spreads out over a vast area; one part of this flooded area is known as Lake Killamperpunna. The Birdsville Track runs close to it and becomes impassable. At these times, a long detour to the east comes into use; this crosses the Cooper further upstream via a ferry provided by the South Australian Government. Here we are looking roughly south at the ’narrow’ part of the Cooper where the ferry crosses. Lake Killamperpunna is just out of shot to the right.
