The order Rodentia contains about 40% of all mammals; the vast majority are Northern Hemisphere species not relevant here. There are nevertheless 60-odd rodent species native to Australia, all part of the gigantic family Muridae (nearly 1400 species worldwide). Sri Lanka has about 18 murids, and also the Indian Crested Porcupine, plus 7 squirrel species.
