The Mountain River drains the valley between Mt Wellington and Sleeping Beauty., eventually flowing through Ranelagh to join the Huon at Huonville.
It is a small river - surprisingly small considering the high country it begins in - but flows pretty close to all year round.
Driving south from Hobart, shortly after you cross Vince’s Saddle, the local authorities have placed a sign saying "Huon Valley" with one of those "take a picture here" icons at a roadside stop which provides a magnificent view of the Mountain River Valley. You can’t even see the Huon Valley from there. Go figure.
