$order

Pelicaniformes ...

storks, herons and allies

Most medium and large freshwater bird groups are classified as Pelicaniformes, including storks, ibises and spoonbills, herons, egrets and bitterns, cormorants, darters, and of course pelicans. There is evidence to suggest that the cormorants and darters properly belong to a seperate order. At present the official Birdlife Australia Working List of Australian Birds (which this site mostly follows) retains the older classification.
